MANILA — Arena Grandmaster (AGM) Dandel Fernandez has once again shown that Pinoy Chess is a global athlete after finishing second in the challenging 28th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival – Frontline Heroes at the Radisson Blu Hotel & Resort , Abu Dhabi Corniche in Abu Dhabi , United Arab Emirates on August 22.
Fernandez scored 6.0 points from five wins and one loss to finish as the tournament’s first runner-up behind Fide Master champion Ammar Sedrani of the United Arab Emirates who scored 6.5 points.

Fernandez, a frontline at the Saudi German Hospital in the United Arab Emirates, also helped the Philippines/Novelty chess team under sportsman Sonsea Agonoy finish second with teammate and compatriot Nelman Lagutin at the 28th International Festival Abu Dhabi Chess – Communities Tournament on August 20th.

Fernandez, a former Maynilad top chess player, created the biggest upset in the 2v2 team event after halving the point with international master Ali Sebbar of Egypt in the fourth round, knocked down Grandmaster Bassem Amin of Egypt in the sixth round and beat Fide Master Hilwani. Talal from Syria in the seventh and final round.

“I would like to dedicate my victory to God, to my company Saudi German Hospital, to my frontline colleagues as well as to my compatriots. It is an honor to represent our country,” added Coach Fernandez, a former NCR SCUAA to the player from the Technological University of the Philippines-Manila, who is also a certified National Master in the Philippines.
