Today, on International Chess Day, we take a look at how the classic checkerboard pattern has made its way onto catwalks and wardrobes

The checkerboard pattern has taken a quaint detour from race car culture and traditional chessboards and is currently having its moment in the sun thanks to the rise of gingham and a growing fondness for the aesthetic of picnic tables. . Classically associated with spring, this playful pattern was originally associated with lumberjacks, but quickly grew into one of the greatest traditional patterns in the West. In the 1970s, this pattern gained popularity in the interior design industry. From there, he ticked all the right boxes and worked his way from tiling to fashion shows.

Gaining popularity during the Ska movement (also known as the Two-Tone Wave), this monochrome pattern represented the merging of “white” and “black” sounds in the music industry. Over the years it has gradually evolved into a signature look for skateboarders and the generation of streetwear style championed by brands like Vans. Many designers, including Louis Vuitton and Burberry, have also jumped on the bandwagon with their checkerboard patterns and their famous tartan plaid pattern, respectively. Recently, this print made an appearance on the catwalks of the Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada Autumn Winter 21/22 collection, the Maison Margiela Spring 2022 collection and the Emilia Wickstead Autumn Winter 2022 collection.

The checkerboard pattern still remains a fashion favorite and continues to remain relevant with fresh colors, unique textures and distorted designs. From summer-ready gingham dresses, houndstooth bags to plaid shirts, it keeps popping up in the market in different shapes and forms. Hints of this feel-good, fun, and symmetrical trend have already infiltrated our Instagram feed with checkerboard nail art, handbags, denim, and multiple celebrity sightings rocking it.
