Indian GM SL Narayanan wins Cattolica International Open chess tournament; Praggnanandhaa Finishes Second – Latest Jammu and Kashmir News | Tourism

CATTOLICA (Italy), March 8: Indian grandmaster SL Narayanan emerged victorious at the Grandiscacchi Cattolica International Open here on Tuesday while compatriot R Praggnanandhaa finished second.

Narayanan and six others, including Praggnanandhaa, tied for first with 6.5 points after nine rounds. However, Narayanan took first place based on a better tie-break score.

The 24-year-old India’s top-seeded general manager went unbeaten through the nine innings. He drew against Pier Luigi Basso (Italy) in the ninth and final round on Tuesday.

He posted four wins and five draws to score 6.5 points. Victories came against Italian Alex Dobboletta, his compatriot Akshat Khamparia, Jobaova Baadur (Georgia) and Belarusian Sergei Azarov. Among his draws, one was against Praggnanandhaa.

Praggnanandhaa also finished with four wins and five draws. He picked up victories over Sauat Nurgaliyev (Kazakhstan), Nikolas Wachinger (Germany), Dutchman Lucas Van Foreest and Meruert Kamalidenova (Kazakhstan). In the final round, Praggnanandhaa shared the point with Lorenzo Lodici of Italy.

India’s Pranav Anand, an international master, secured ninth place with six points while fellow Indian Akshat Khamparia took 11th place with the same number of points. (PTI)
