Indian wicket-beater veteran Dinesh Karthik has praised Yuzvendra Chahal for showing a lot of “character” despite not being selected for the 2021 T20 World Cup in Oman and the United Arab Emirates. National coaches chose young leg spinner Rahul Chahar over Chahal for the mega event and the move didn’t work as India couldn’t get past the Super 12.

After being sidelined, Chahal performed exceptionally well for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2021 IPL second leg. The 31-year-old subsequently returned to the Indian squad for the T20I three-game series. versus New Zealand. After missing out on the Jaipur and Ranchi T20I, the tweaker had his chance in the third and final match at Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens.

In that game, he finished with numbers 4-0-26-1 as India won by 73 points after beating the opposition for 111 in 17.2 overs. Karthik, who last played for India in the 2019 World Cup, said that because Chahal played chess he is a few steps ahead of the rest.

He grew up on his own in IPL, says Dinesh Karthik

“It’s great to see him come back. And he showed his character. The way he played in the IPL second leg; he was an absolute champion. I always rate him very high because he’s also a chess player and they always have a few strokes ahead of normal people, ”Karthik told Cricbuzz.

Karthik also opened up about how Chahal took giant leaps in his career after RCB hired him for INR 10 lakhs at the auction a few seasons ago.

“And that’s always a special attribute for me. He has good skills, good variations and is a brave bowler and he grew up in IPL on his own. It was bought for 10 lakhs INR by RCB in 2013, and now it is beyond what it is and it shows that it has improved over time and has shown its value. I’m sure he will be retained by the franchise, ”he said.

Karthik also backed Chahal to compete in next year’s T20 World Cup at Australia. “He is also a very good overseas bowler, a very important attribute to keep in mind when India travels to Australia for the upcoming T20 World Cup,” Karthik added.
