Chess returns to the Boys & Girls Club of Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES — After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19 protocols, the Boys & Girls Club of Las Cruces Chess Club resumed regular play this school year with more than 20 elementary and middle school participants.

The chess year culminated with its annual end-of-school-year tournament. The winner of this year’s tournament is 10-year-old Alex S., a fifth-grade student at Desert Hill Elementary. Chris V., 11, a fifth-grade student at Hillrise Elementary, finished second. Third place went to 6-year-old Sophia N., who is a freshman at Tombaugh Elementary.

Alex S. was named Chess Player of the Year. Chis V. was chosen as the player who best exemplified sportsmanship. Eight-year-old Soledad H., who attends third grade at Desert Hills, was named the most improved player.

According to a press release, the organizers paid special attention to Sophia N., who was named newcomer of the year. This 6-year-old schoolboy joined the club in March. In 10 weeks, she acquired enough skills to finish third in the tournament. Her chess instructor said that, despite her young age and limited playing time, she had developed the best opening skills of any member of the chess club. The organizers expect great achievements in his chess future.
